With our friends at Third Man Records and 826michigan, Lafayette American designed, organized, and executed a songwriting workshop for high school students in Detroit. At a time where funding for the arts continues to be cut at an alarming rate, Song Shop brings together Detroit musicians with high school students to workshop ideas for lyrics and music. The two-part class includes brainstorming, collaborating, practicing, polishing, and performing. Even Jack White got involved, surprising the students with a video message of encouragement. It all came together with a live recording at Third Man’s Detroit HQ and culminated in the record’s pressing and release on Record Store Day 2020 at several locations throughout the city.
