Assignment: The objective was to capture and communicate the essence of Adia Victoria through visual expression...to develop a visual interpretation of the Nashville-based Atlantic recording artist, vocalist and songwriter based upon life drawings, personal photos, notes, and conversation.

Approach: As Adia is a musician, our assumptions upon meeting her was that she would perform a few songs and then follow up with a few questions. However, this was not the case. Adia showed us a very intimate part of herself. She began by reading some gothic poetry in French that is a major source of inspiration for her music and then reciting her own poetry. She also dove into her own personal experiences as an artist and the challenges she’s faced through the years. Even describing memories from her childhood in vivid detail. My approach to capturing an entire being in one still image is through symbolism. However eloquent Adia is in physical form, she’s more than a stunning face or simply a musician.

Results: By abstracting the qualities and experiences she contains as a person, it is a solution that captures more than one aspect of an individual. By taking elements from her poetry, music, interests, memories, habits, appearance it creates an image the subject can resonate and unpack every symbolic object to something personal and leaves a compelling image for a view to interpret in countless ways.
