The assignment was to design new cover possibilities for the Art and Literary Magazine of West Georgia, which is our campus magazine for the University of West Georgia.
I approached this assignment through many iterations which first started with creation by hand. This consisted of first researching our campus magazine's history and, from the results and knowledge, working iteratively through collage methods with simple material and the assistance of a toner scanner for recreation. This moved into the process of silhouette cutting and photography, followed lastly with the computer assistance of Photoshop and InDesign for editing. The resulting product of the cover was created by silhouetted letter cut of vellum which were layered atop one another. By the use of a darkroom and a flashlight, regular and colored, I was able to photograph the translucent affect that the two created together.
My first results were of seventy different versions of photographed and collaged work for the cover design, which then went through a process critique with both myself and my colleagues in order to narrow down the content and make subtle decisions for the interest of the design and it's purpose. The final product was decided upon by combining elements from a few of the strongest designs that were chosen by myself after the critique. Accompanying the cover is the approximately seventy-five page magazine, also redesigned.
