Design an alphabet board book that features objects that are the colors of the rainbow. Goal was to create a bright bold sturdy board book that will stimulate little developing eyes, hands, and minds…all while introducing them to objects, letters, words, and the colors of the spectrum and in the correct order.
Used saturated colors, in the actual order of the color spectrum, to introduce and teach the color spectrum at an early age. Secondary concept showcased: pastels, transparency, negative space, geometry, and patterns (concentric, radial, gradation, checkerboard, stripes, etc.). Type is large for ease of visibility and traceability. It is angled not only to add dynamism to the layout, but also to encourage experiencing book from all angles and habituate young learners to understanding letters from various orientations. A few foreign words (gelato, piñata) are included to demonstrate alternate sounds of letters and expand the world view of toddlers…a taste that other languages exist and the world is a big, beautiful, colorful place. Rainbows, after all, symbolize inclusion. Initial letters are highlighted in color. No letter color/field combination is repeated in the book. Rainbow foil is added where appropriate to the image to attract and delight young wide eyes and to demonstrate that color is mutable and a function of the physics of light waves. Lastly, the cover images wraps on all sides so when you put the back and front covers side by side, they billboard to form a full rainbow arc.
