Introducing, Selma Blair is a profoundly intimate and raw documentary following actress Selma Blair after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Unlike other celebrity documentaries that release with an eye toward their next career move, this documentary is not about Selma’s celebrity or fame at all. Instead, it is an unflinching look at her life as a woman and mother as she navigates her debilitating disability. The client challenged us to create art that delivered a bold statement about the raw vulnerability of Selma’s journey in the film using provocative imagery that was unique but not glamorous.
We wanted to make sure the art wasn’t just another pretty picture of a celebrity, so focused on strong imagery from the film. We looked for powerful caught moments that revealed Selma’s journey of personal acceptance and resilience living with a disability, and also reflected her unique style and grace. Our goal was to find visually arresting shots that felt artful yet still conveyed a tone of seriousness and sophistication.
We chose to show a moment from the scene where Selma was floating in her pool in a Yves Saint Laurent dress. We felt this image was unique, attention-grabbing, and reflective of the film’s purpose. It literally and figuratively submerged this notion of glamour and celebrity to encourage the audience to focus on Selma, the woman, as she stays afloat, navigating her path to peace and serenity living with multiple sclerosis.
The client was happy with how the key art set the film apart from other celebrity documentaries. It was personal, intimate, eye-catching, and delivered an honest portrayal of Selma’s emotions as she lives with this disability. The movie and campaign received buzz on social media and at various film festivals.
