For my Video class, I was assigned to create a video review of a unique product I owned. I chose a custom-made hachimaki headband, a traditional Japanese headgear used for martial arts and as a study aid in schools.

I scripted the beginning of the video to seem like a typical review video made with B-roll and straightforward voiceover, then suddenly interrupted this atmosphere with a more lighthearted and fast-paced fight scene. This was done to reference the martial arts origins of the hachimaki. The actor portraying the antagonist was labelled with the kanji for "distractions" to signify the battle between the wearer of the headband and the obstacles keeping her from completing her work. The voiceover and lip movements were also mismatched as a comedic reference to foreign language martial arts movies. The video ends with a translation of the kanji characters on the headband.

I received an A on the assignment. I am particularly happy with the sound design of the video, as I think the two different pieces of music and record-scratch sound effect help convey the sudden tone shift in the beginning. I also think the different camera angles and movements lend themselves well to the comedic, campy roots of the video and signal its tone of parody.
