In collaboration with North Face Athlete Anna Pfaff, the goal of this project was to capture the spirit and soul of the ice climbing experience in an interesting and unique way. I wanted to capture the risk and reward of the sport, and what better way to do so than to capture a scene of her scaling up massive towers of ice from far below?

In order to accentuate the color of Anna's clothing and climbing rope, I knew that I would need to rely on a cool color palette for the ice, mountains, and the sky. Additionally, I wanted the viewer's attention to be directed straight into the action, so framing her in between the spires of ice and adding a cool blue tone to the image seemed to be a good bet to achieve the mood and composition I had envisioned.

The images from this project were very well received, and were utilized across The North Face's social media channels as promotional material. As an experienced climber myself, I believe I was able to capture the sport in an authentic way, and get myself into spaces that may prove difficult to a less experienced climbing photographer.
