PowerStream Inc. is a community-owned energy company that provides power and related services to more than 350,000 customers and a population of over 1,000,000 within a service area of 806 square kilometers in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in Central Ontario. In addition to delivering power as the second largest municipally-owned electricity distribution system in Ontario (jointly owned by the municipalities of Barrie, Markham and Vaughan) with distribution assets valued at over $1.3 Billion to homes and businesses in its service territory, PowerStream also operates a solar generation business and offers conservation and demand management programs to its customers. Recognized for being one of “Canada’s Greenest Employers”, PowerStream has also seen several significant accomplishments occur in the past year, including signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to collaborate on a Smart Grid/Micro Grid project, and the installation of high-speed Level 3 and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the company’s head office. As the agency tasked with this exciting and significant project, the assignment of Skylar Media was to tell the remarkable story of PowerStream not only in its 10th year, but of the entire 10 years of its existence, highlighting innovative projects, significant milestones and community-related achievements that separate PowerStream from the rest of its industry.
Skylar Media took a strategic approach to the creative of this piece that would allow for a highly flexible, easily adaptable and aesthetically pleasing design. We developed a concept that was modular in nature, with the ability to grow or retract depending on content, without losing any of the visual appeal under which it was based. While the core objective of any annual report is to convey the facts, figures and information that tell the story of the business, we made a significant effort to convey the story in a way that only asked the words and numbers to tell half the story; the visuals do the rest.
Skylar Media has a longstanding relationship with PowerStream, having handled various marketing communications projects since its inception in 2004. Tasked with handling the most significant report as PowerStream celebrates a decade of existence was not an assignment taken lightly, and the results speak for themselves. Working closely with the Communications Team at PowerStream, Skylar collaborated for over 500 hours of combined account and project content management, distribution and creation. The end-result of the project has seen it become the most well-received report in its 10 years of existence, as reviews from notable key figures associated with PowerStream in both internal and directorship roles have been categorically positive. Proof of such reaction can be found in the creation of a ‘Special Edition’ hardcover addition that has been implemented into an additional run of reports that is being distributed to dignitaries, shareholders and key figures throughout PowerStream and the municipalities in which it serves. The context under which the special edition pieces were created is that this is a report that is worth retaining, displaying and showcasing. We are honored that our work has been judged with such distinction, and are proud to showcase it here for the world to see.
