Founded in 1861, Vassar College is a highly selective, residential, coeducational liberal arts college. Consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the country, Vassar is renowned for pioneering achievements in education, for its long history of curricular innovation, and for the beauty of its campus. For the second year, Vassar asked Nesnadny + Schwartz to design and develop their Online Annual Report. The firm’s role was to develop the conceptual and visual theme, create the overall design, and manage production from inception to launch.
Vassar College confronted a variety of challenges during the 2014/15 academic and fiscal year. As a response they rededicated themselves to their founder’s original vision – “to furnish the means of a thorough, well-proportioned and liberal education…that empowers individuals with broad knowledge, liberates the mind from ignorance, and cultivates social responsibility” while ensuring “that no student of superior promise should be turned away due to a lack of means.” The theme of “Renew” emphasized this recommitment to the school’s founding principles, and served as a platform for telling multiple college-related stories regarding sustainability, staff additions, student research, and diversity while at the same time recognizing leading donors, and publishing the year’s financial statements. Nesnadny + Schwartz illustrated the “Renew” theme by playing off the use of “re.” as in “about” or “concerning,” but also as a visual metaphor for doing something again. The design relies on bold typography to reinforce the thematic and conceptual approach, and is supported by saturated color and lush hero-image photography.
The Vassar 2014/15 Online Annual Report is used primarily as a marketing vehicle to communicate with faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and friends of the college. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding the simplicity of the site’s mechanics, ease of navigation, and simple architecture.
