Devoto Orchards is a family-owned farm in Sonoma County, CA, dedicated to making small-batch, artisanal ciders from the farm’s organic heirloom apples. To capitalize on a rapidly expanding cider market and to meet growing demand, Devoto Orchards developed a new brand of all-natural, hard cider: Golden State Cider.
Golden State Cider sources only the best apples from the West Coast [California, Oregon, and Washington], and is free of concentrates, sugar, added water, and gluten. And in true Devoto Orchards style, the cider is made by Californians, for Californians, and is available only in the Golden State.
With a product that personified California, Golden State Cider needed a brand to match.
To launch Golden State Cider, 160over90’s creative team settled into a ‘golden state of mind.’ The team built a brand narrative that was synonymous with the California lifestyle—active, adventurous, and aspirational, while still being authentic—and carried it across a logo and mark, packaging, branded gear, and drinking accessories.
Brand messaging—one of our favorites is ‘From our orchard to your table, or surfboard or lawn, or rock or hood, or backpack or hammock’—embodies California’s on-the-go, explorative nature. And a bright color palette of orange, cream, and teal exudes a coastal, carefree vibe.
To accompany Golden State Cider’s draft debut in August 2014, 160over90 designed branded pint glasses, coasters and cocktail napkins, keg collars, tap handles, and table toppers to fully outfit bars and restaurants. Promotional swag, from beach towels to t-shirts, will be used as giveaways at upcoming launch events, to help cultivate a loyal brand following. And looking ahead, 160over90-designed Golden State Cider cans and carry boxes will hit California shelves in late summer 2014.
Golden State Cider hit the North Bay market one week ago [at the time of award submission] and quickly earned praise from branding influencers in the San Francisco area and on a national stage. Early sales numbers will be available at the end of 2014.
