Exekias is a potter and painter who signed his work. He lived 550 bc in Athens. Worldwide there are forty pieces around, twenty of them are shown at the first monographic exhibition, at the Archeological Collection in Zurich. G+A was asked to design all visual communication for this exhibition on Exekias.
The cover communicates different aspects in a single image: Exekias signed with the words "Exekias painted and made me", this is the name of the book and the exhibition. The fronts shows one side of the vase, the back the other. The fragements on the cover express that these are old vases, that are patched together as well as Exekias is a potter AND painter. His name is placed around the round spine to express the threedimensionality of his work.
Opening the book you get introduced into color scheme of greek pots. The book is structured in two parts, first essays on Exekias. This text heavy part is focused on reading typography, thus, printed on offset paper. Second, the objects presented in the exhibition. This part is focused on pictures, showing all angles and details, descriptions are kept rather small, and it's printed on coated paper. This book is a benchmark for every one interested into that topic.
