Assignment
Create a poster for the celebration of Juneteenth in the community of Sherman TX that welcomes people of all ages.
Approach
Through research we learned a french abolitionist proposed the Statue of Liberty to be gifted to America as not only a way to commemorate the alliance of France and the United States but also to celebrate the work of Abraham Lincoln in the perseverance of freedom and democracy in the United States. Making it the ultimate symbol and a constant reminder of hope, equality and freedom in America.
By combining the Statue of Liberty with African-American textiles, color palettes, and patterns we are able to visually communicate these in a simple and family friendly way.
Results
The event saw record attention from the media. Going from a small article several pages deep into the newspaper, to front page news. As well as tv coverage and increased attendance from the community. The poster helped bring awareness to the event but also to the holiday itself as it is lesser known to those outside of the African American community.
