Our assignment from Popular Science was to create six covers throughout the year that were to be cohesive and topical. Each issue was to have a standalone theme, but at the end of the year the covers should appear as a set. For these three covers we were approached with the topics of exploration, weird weather, and water.

Our first move was to begin researching and sketching out ideas that would be broad enough to cover each topic, working to illustrate a unique take on each. There was plenty of discussion with both the Editor in Chief and Photo Editor going back and forth on concepts and executions. The Popular Science team pushed us to take our ideas farther and farther, building on concepts until we had a handful of final directions. For each issue we would execute two to three cover options.

In the end, we produced a body of striking images that we felt brought these topics to life and the team at Popular Science felt the same way.
