Data can be used to tell a story and to reveal information about one’s own health through tracking trends and revealing habits. The goal of the project is to better understand a person’s relationship with their food. Lack of understanding about what goes into what we are eating and what its nutritional value can have a negative impact on our health.
Nourishment is an interactive app that helps people learn about the nutritional density of the food they eat while providing a contextual understanding of their food. While traditional food diaries and apps track calories, understanding the components of food is critical. The design uses color to distinguish the category of ingredients and each ingredient and meal can be plotted and compared to recommended percentage values. While a Reese’s cup and a hard-boiled egg are close in calorie count, their nutritional values vary greatly. In designing the interface, I wanted people to be able to compare both their eating over a few days to see how their eating habits change and to reflect on how their eating choices could have affected other aspects of their day.
By exploring the topic of nutrition through the lens of my personal diet, I was able to get a better picture of the nutritional density of the food I was eating on a daily basis. This was useful information in helping me to improve my athletic performance. I was able to see what I had eaten on days that I had performed well and replicate those meals to have consistently better workouts.
