The project provides an opportunity for African American Stories to be heard and passed down in an editorial format. The Griot initiative of StoryCorps started to collect interviews about African American life from 2007. A griot, pronounced gree-oh, is the traditional West African title for a storyteller, whose mission is to pass down the oral history of family and community from generation to generation.

A genuine conversation and storytelling are often the most influential words, and typography treatments serve as vessels for these experiences. The vessels differ in characteristics such as scale, texture, and weight according to the context. Bold and diverse typography moves express the distinct tone of voice of each individual. Inspiration is drawn from the color scheme of Harlem Renaissance artworks, the dynamic color combination of violet and yellow communicates the richness and enthusiasm of African American culture.

The contents of the interviews themselves would be the purpose of the project. By recording, sharing, and preserving the stories, the connection of humanity strengthens, and a more compassionate world is created. The goal of the initiative is to ensure the experiences of African Americans would be genuinely preserved and presented with dignity.
