The assignment was to create a poster to promote Purdue Contemporary Dance Company's Winter Dance Works performance. The dance performance is an annual event and has been promoted with a long succession of award winning poster designs by designers such as David Sigman and Li Zhang. It is a pleasure and a challenge to produce work that hopefully continues this legacy.
Since this was the second performance and poster in an annual series, I wanted to continue the idea of combining photography with a graphic element and typography that I had used in the first poster for the Spring Dance Works performance. My approach was to find a visual way to project the energy that contemporary dance brings to the stage. The Mark Simons photograph that was chosen expresses grace, speed and power. I then combined the typography and a multi-layer graduated dot graphic approach to emphasize the dancers speed, direction, balance and grace. The subtle blues were added to provide a winter feel in opposition to the pinks and peach tones of the dancer
I believe this poster design was successful in all aspects...the client was thrilled, again the performances were sold out. The poster received some very nice comments and hopefully some recognition from the design community.
