The assignment for this project was to create an ad for a nonprofit dealing with the topic of climate change.
The ideation of this project was intensive. Not only were the the main issues of climate change and corporate culpability thoroughly researched, but various methods were utilized to funnel the information into workable concepts. Visuals, emotions, idioms, facts and figures were compiled and from those elements the idea for a guerrilla projection was formed. The Climate Mobilization was chosen as the nonprofit, since their mission is to mobilize governments and people in order to combat the harsh consequences of climate change. The concept was simple: use projection technology to create a moving visual representation of rising ocean levels and their threat to coastal cities. While the initial rendition was a simple poster, it became clear that the concept would be best realized in the form of an animation. Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, and After Effects were all heavily utilized in the production of this animation.
The result of the process is a simple, fifteen second representation of the concept. The water refractions create an eye-catching display for passersby, while the flickering dates communicate the ticking of time and the ominous future. The hashtag provides the viewers with a direction to look for more information on how to get involved in the solution.
