POP project’s mission is to create happenings, things, spectacles, ideas, performances and experiences across Auckland. Pop exists to make fun, unite strangers, fuse creativity and create an instant community on every street corner. Some of these events are annual, some monthly, others occasional. All are designed to create a crowd and activate the public spaces of the city.
POP Poetry is an interactive installation. Its form is a black steel hut large enough to house a writer’s desk, chair and laptop. The laptop is connected to a projector built into the top of the hut which projects large format animated type onto whatever surface is in front of it. A bespoke application was built based on the POP typeface. The application turns the POP typeface into interactive particles that animate into words and letters while the writer types on the laptop inside the hut. The camera built into the hut allows a playful interaction between the pop writer and the projection.
The hut is designed to be simple, easy to transport and run from a rechargeable battery, providing flexibility for installation and broad opportunities to activate different types of spaces. The hut has been activated by different Auckland writers, poets and thinkers, projecting existing work as well as live improvised and responsive works on different parts of the city.
