ASSIGNMENT

Honest Herbs was created for a Design IV packaging project. The logo, concept, design, and final design were created specifically for this assignment. My goal was to present a gardening company that sets itself apart by making home gardening kits accessible to the consumer to grow their own organic culinary herbs. This allows the consumer to feel closer and more knowledgeable about what they are eating no matter how much space they have to work with.

APPROACH

The logo for this concept was derived from the organic form of rosemary. Rosemary is attractive and drought tolerant which makes it the perfect symbol for a home gardening kit that will withstand alternative growing environments. The fresh herbs grown with this package will be the most honest because the consumer will have grown them with their own hands. Therefore, their food is not tampered with between production and consumption. The color blue derives from ancient greek mythology referencing the Virgin Mary who laid her blue cloak onto a white-blossomed rosemary tree while she was asleep. The cloak turned the flowers blue. I created photographic cyanotypes of herbs to reflect the natural form of the blue flowers in the rosemary bushes while providing an organic element to the instructional guide. Modern monoline illustrations accompanied by the nontraditional color palette brings Honest Herbs the sophistication and elegance it needs to appeal to health conscious and eco-friendly people who desire to create their own herbs.

RESULTS

Honest Herbs caters to people interested in gardening and cooking who enjoy a hands on approach. The kit is designed to grown fresh rosemary, thyme, and parsley in versatile spaces. With this product everyone can have fresh herbs without needing a large outdoor space. Honest Herbs evokes elegance, modernity, versatility, and quality while maintaining accessibility to the public.
