Create awareness for the 2015–16 SCAD School of Building Arts Lecture Series with a poster/mailer to be sent to professional industry partners and SCAD alumni, students, faculty and staff.
Summary: This lecture series connects students and the larger design community with industry professionals who exemplify a theme related to the building arts. The 2015–16 theme explores building and sustaining a global practice across the realms of architecture, interior design, historic preservation, furniture design, architectural history and urban design.
The featured speakers are building-arts leaders who highlight ways in which artistic foundations elevate students in their future careers as the world’s premier architects, designers, preservationists, historians and urbanists.
The idea of this year’s lecture series is “Global Practice.”
Themes include: • Draw students from every direction • Propel students to global markets • Transcontinental collaborations • Built work on a global scale (“global building studio”)

In order to stand out from the hundreds of pieces the recipients receive annually, we designed a piece that meets U.S. mail requirements while still engaging interest in folded form and visually arresting when hung. Viewers see something different each time they look. The design is based on a loose interpretation of the globe, a nod to the series theme of “Global Practice.” The incorporation of student work breathes life into the land masses and adds dimension that pays homage to the peaks and valleys presented in a traditional topographic map. The use of the student’s painting as the basis for the abstract land mass brings a fine-arts focus into the piece, which is the foundation on which the building-arts disciplines at SCAD rest.
The client was extremely pleased with the final piece, which contributed to increased attendance for each lecture over last year’s figures. Nearly all lectures were standing room only. The piece was also presented during a visit by the interior design program accreditation body and received favorable feedback from the accreditation team. The American Institute of Architects received the posters, later requesting additional invites to each lecture in order to cross-promote to their audiences and electing to award continuing education credits to professional architects who attend.
