Category: Social Commentary, specifically the Militarization of Police Departments across America.
1: Raise awareness of the presence of military weapons and armored vehicles by police departments across America.
2: Imply the potentially oppressive effects of military devices to engender aggressive actions to typical police interactions with the public, through the repeated use of industrial forms throughout the poster.
The approach taken to communicate the presence of military equipment across much of America was to use the tools (AR-15 assault rifles, gas masks, Flash Bang grenades) and military vehicles (MRAP vehicles, Hummer trucks), etc., via a "Kit of Parts" technique using segments, parts and imagery as elements in a "type as image" collage spelling out "DE-MiL" Similarly a Flash Bang grenade is substituted for the letter "i" in Police. Alternately, the simplified segments of vehicles and weapons are reconfigured as whole articulated drawings of weapons and vehicles arranged across the bottom to a close connecting shapes seen in “DE-MIL’ collage to their origins.
The design was widely accepted.
