To create a poster of an information graphic, containing approx. 320 names of architectural firms, while showing their lifespans over a 180-year period. It must also show each firm's predecessor firms and successor firms. The infographic should also cross-reference significant events such as the Confederation of Canada, the Great Depression World War II and others. The poster will also cross reference the list of firms with approx. 120 images of significant architectural work over the 180-year period. A brief list of significant milestones was also included.
We decided to condense the information design by creating a radial set of 320, 180-year timelines, and plotting each firm's lifespan along the radial timeline, with the firm's name listed at the end of each radial line. This was effective as there were fewer older firms, so at the more dense centre of the graphic, there were less life spans to depict, while further away from the centre, there were more lifespans but much more area. The poster was oversized (55" tall) to enable us to include all information. Large format offset printing was required.
The poster was used in Canada 150 celebrations in Ottawa, also given to members of the Ottawa architectural community, and kept as both a paper monument to Ottawa's architecture practitioners by the architects, and as a permanent record of Ottawa architecture practices.
