Professor Strong assigned us to design an original typeface for a staff or faculty member at our university.

Liz loves story-telling, especially when it comes to her family. She runs her own family research by keeping up with family records at the library or just simply meeting with relatives and recording their conversations. She is currently working on a family scrapbook and family tree. Since information technology is also important to her, I wanted to incorporate that into the typeface as well. I worked with geometric forms to do so. I used a square shape to create a digital appearance and a circle to represent continuity since Liz wants to continue and carry on her family’s story. The square-like letterforms are meant to remind you of the numbers you might see on a digital clock or screen. The rounded notches, outer edges, and inner corners are all derived from a circle. These characteristics not only represent her family research but create a sense of balance and softness juxtaposed with rigid and flatforms. The rounded notches are meant to remind the viewer of the buttons found on a camera. Lastly, I would like to point out the lowercase “a,” which is meant to look like a video camera, equipment Liz uses to film her son’s lacrosse faceoffs and games.

Elizabeth Curinga is not only a computer consultant but a storyteller as well. On-campus, she runs the help desk, conducts classroom support, oversees the equipment and database in The Cage, and trains faculty, staff and students. This part of her life inspired the digital feel of the typeface, with its square and rigid forms. At home, she takes care of her two sons and especially enjoys supporting them during their lacrosse games, traveling with them across the US and filming all their faceoffs. Ms. Curinga also conducts genealogical research and is currently working on a scrapbook and family tree to piece together her family’s history and continue sharing their stories. To reflect this more personal layer of her life, I incorporated the continuity that a circle represents some of the corners, while the rounded notches were inspired by the buttons on a camera. The concept of these exhibit panels was inspired by a circuit board and the soon-to-be-completed Curinga family tree.
