The Dinosaur Ball is NHM's bi-annual fundraising event. There are two rounds of invitations; the Patron Package (larger and flashier to build excitement) mails several months before the event, and the Invitation (a discreet, elegant reminder) mails the month of the event. The two are considered a set, and should build on one another. The assignment was to create a set of invitations that would inspire high-level donors to participate, based around the theme of the event: Urban Nature Speakeasy.
For an "Urban Nature meets Speakeasy" theme, we created the key image of a flower growing out of an Edison bulb. Gold and clear foil stamping creates the illusion of the bulb turning on/off as the invitation catches the light, and subtle pinstripes remind us of gangster's suits. The shape and layout of the invitation evokes a bar menu, all of which sets the tone for a mysterious and elegant event.
Our continual challenge as a nonprofit is to present an elegant design solution within a minimal budget. We designed these invitations to minimize waste, re-use dies, and run items together. We proudly delivered this project under budget.
Dinosaur Ball 2017 was widely hailed as the "best Dino Ball yet". Thanks in part to the invitations, the fundraising goal for the event was exceeded. The event designers used our invitation designs as a jumping-off point for their own graphics, and the end result was a seamlessly consistent, beautifully produced event. Guests took photos in front of a larger-than-life golden "lightbulb flower", Edison bulbs dangled from trees, and a video honoring our donors brought the graphics to life.
