A grapefruit was chosen to the be focus of this cover for multiple reasons. Lyme disease creates a rash on the skin that resembles a bullseye and also, loosely, a grapefruit. The grapefruit also relates to the text in that the author uses repurposed scripture to describe the queer experience. Fruit is often used as a metaphor in scripture, particularly to describe the “forbidden fruit” of sin, which being queer is considered. Because this is a very personal collection, and because it’s written in the style of letters, having a hand-lettered title seemed the most fitting.
