Phase One IQ280, Mamiya 45mm lens, Profoto strobe lighting
This image is part of my long term personal project of artist portraits. While much of my practice involves documenting the works of many and varied artists, it is the people and places of their creation that drive me. Pete Mattila is a blacksmith, sculptor and knife maker, as well as a trainer and generous mentor. His studio is tucked away on the waterfront in Hobart, Tasmania.
For Pete, this was the documentation of his latest work. For me it was a creative challenge and an opportunity to capture the hidden side of Pete's art practice and to demonstrate his technical and creative skills. This artwork was a bit too big to bring to my studio, and the setting was ideal for a mixed light twilight action portrait.
