The assignment was made to design a poster and support materials for the Purdue Contemporary Dance Company's winter dance performance. The Purdue University Division of Dance in the Patti and Rusty Ruff School of Visual and Performing Arts, College of Liberal Arts sponsored the performance and design assignment.
The concept was to photograph the dancers and select a single image that represented the integrity and dynamic movement that was presented throughout the dance performances. It was important for the dancer's lines and shape to create an interaction with the space on the page as well as edges of the page and the typography.Theatrical lighting was used to enhance the feel of performance.
Kayla Steckel, the dancer in the poster's image created a fluid and expressive shape that is enhanced by the graphics on the body suit. The image selected creates tension with the edges of the page as well as the typography while also developing a visual appealing weight distribution. The typography was placed on the diagonal to create an illusion of balance and more tension with dancer and the page.
