This assignment was to creatively design an introduction to a movie, thinking about graphic design through time and sequence. I chose the movie, The Martian, and conceptually focused on the themes of isolation and abandonment.

The protagonist, Mark Watney, is separated millions of miles away from his home, abandoned by his fellow astronauts, and isolated on a planet that cannot grow food. He embraces his loneliness, and in doing so, he inhabits the unfamiliar territory. I portrayed a forward progression of Watney’s sense of loneliness and abandonment, and how that relates to the forward progression of abandonment on Earth, using ghost towns transforming into city skylines.

This title sequence alludes to the literal and non-literal disconnect between Mark Watney and life on earth to represent the main themes of isolation and abandonment.
