With over 100 million active players, League of Legends is, by far, the biggest video game in the world. Yet despite its massive popularity and vibrant fan community, League of Legends’ maker, Riot Games, had never released their game art to the public.
For this long-awaited debut, Riot tapped All Boats Rise. Our primary task: create a high-end book featuring the concept art of Riot’s top designers. Our secondary task: don’t blow it. Riot Games had been notoriously secretive about their assets and didn’t want their “coming out” to be a flop.
Working closely with Riot staff, we unearthed and organized years of sketches, digital paintings and more. We immersed ourselves in the lore of the League. And only then did we set out to curate and design the tome.
Riot decided on a run of 5500 books and 500 collector’s editions. If they were lucky, they thought, they would sell them all within a year. In hours, they were all gone. And even better, Riot was lauded by gamers and gaming critics for such a beautiful debut piece.
What was once considered a gamble is now considered, by Riot, just the first edition.
