ICA Fund Good Jobs is an Oakland, CA based non-profit that educates, accelerates, and invests in high-growth local small businesses in order to create accessible good jobs that lead to equitable communities for all. ICA believes that communities thrive when every person has access to a good job – one that provides good pay, good benefits, life ladders, and a strong culture. Over their 20+ history, they have worked with hundreds of companies who have earned hundreds of millions in revenue, created more than 5,000 jobs, and paid over $650 million in wages.
The 2017 Impact Report serves as their annual report, telling stories of successful Bay Area entrepreneurs and the impact these individuals have made on local communities over the course of a year, alongside concrete data to back it.
To tell a story of local, working-class success, meant to focus on the raw, human spirit behind the work. We created a bright, illustrative pattern to capture the essence of the various stories in the report, with each section of the booklet speaking to a tone of color within the overall pattern. Meanwhile, workers from select local businesses were photographed candidly while on the job to paint an intimate portrait of life on the job.
Printing on uncoated stock with hand-stitched binding, and extracting the welcome letter from beneath the cover kept the format honest. A blind embossed title gave the report a handmade feel, with a modest spot of clear foil to allow the title to be recognized without being too ostentatious. No need for dressed up infographics or stylized charts, instead we took a pure focus on the numbers and data at large to let the numbers speak for themselves.
When it came to translating this highly customized print format for the web, we retained the layered approach having users paginate one color-coded section at a time, with a flyover menu reminiscent of the outermost cover flap. Having all of this content contained within the same painterly illustration from the cover that remained fixed upon scroll, offered up some dimension in a rather flat space.
Our design created a renewed buzz around Oakland for ICA Fund Good Jobs and their 20th anniversary campaign. Enrollment for their small business growth education increased 200%. Fundraising increased 350% with CEO Sean Murphy receiving multiple awards and recognition for his new vision for the company, which was initially communicated in this report.
