The goal was to combine letterforms and animals to complete the full aphabet. The animals make up the shape of the letter and are cohesive in color, eyes, and style. I used fun and crazy eyes to let the playfullness shine through. The fun of the project is to learn letter recognition, new names, and animals all in one place.
I started by identifying animals that would best make up each letter, regardless of what letter the animal started with. I began sketching and evolving each letter until it looked just right. I chose a simple color pallete that is flexible enough to give each character its own feeling, but had a cohesive look overall. Lastly, I gave each character a name to match it's personality, and allow kids to learn new names and try to find their own!
The project successfully created a learning tool that is different from other alphabet resources. The animals and letters do not match to allow a higher level of thinking and distinguishing. It allows for name recognition, spelling, and identifying. I was successful in creating a whimsical, funky, and educational system that can be used in a number of different ways.
