Concept, shoot, and edit a photo series based on a poem of your choosing.
I based this photo series off of a spoken word poem by Gloria Carter, Jay-Z's mother. The spoken word was featured as the outro on Jay-Z's track, "Smile," off of his latest album, "4:44," which elegantly sums up what it means be afraid to be your true self in public.
Keeping the focus on the individual, I executed this photo series using portrait photography, while painting smiles on all three individuals to emulate the idea of "hiding in the shadows." I took portrait photos of each of the subjects in attempt to express how people hide behind their smile.
The photo series is titled "Smile," captures three individuals of different race, age, and gender, to show that this fear of being true to oneself knows no boundaries.
