The project was to create a sellable product for an entrepreneurial brand. I created a calendar company called Ephemeris Publishing, specializing in story calendars. My main goal was to educate users about different cultures through the power of storytelling, inviting people to take interest in cultures different from their own. Another goal was to create a product the user would personally interact with.
Oftentimes as adults, we take for granted the time to learn about different cultures through simple myths and tales as we go about our busy lives. Therefore, I took a product that is an integral part of our lives and turned it into a cultural experience. Ephemeris Publishing is a company that produces story calendars, issuing a different calendar every year with one tale from a part of the world. This calendar educates consumers while also being functional. After making the logo for Ephemeris Publishing, I drew illustrations of major scenes in the Tale of the Chinese Zodiac, inspired by traditional papercut. I simultaneously formatted the calendar and accompanying paragraph explaining the top illustration, leaving plenty of room for users to write important events.
The combination of complex papercut illustrations and typeset storytelling successfully informs the viewer of this foreign tale, enticing people to further learn about different cultures around the world. The calendar allows room for the user to write about important events, documenting the user's own story every year.
