Prodigal Son tells the story of a father/son relationship where the father is a notorious serial killer, and the son is a criminal psychologist who uses his knowledge of how killers think to help law enforcement solve crimes and stop killers. We were tasked with developing a high concept and unexpected piece that would convey the themes of internal struggle, layered relationships and the push and pull of good vs. evil. Unlike season one, the season two art needed to showcase the talent to capitalize on the equity season one had built in its characters.
While season one utilized a more literal approach of father and son being inside each other’s heads, this season we utilized a reflection as a visual representation of their interconnectedness. Situating the son in a stark white environment (representing the purity of the son’s intentions and actions), and the father in blood (referencing the father as a killer), symbolized the central show dynamic of them sharing similar qualities, but using them to opposite ends.
The client was happy with the final piece and its ability to showcase the complex father/son dynamic in a compelling, clean, graphic way.
