Response to 2013 Australian Poster Biennale - "A mother’s life is precious".

The poster began with research into the statistics surrounding maternal mortality and the reasons why it occurred. The statistics are the most alarming in undeveloped regions of the world where maternal mortality is 15 times higher than in developed regions*.

I wanted to communicate this statistic and also symbolise the burden a pregnant women would be carring knowing that her pregnancy may cause her death and her babies as well. The gritty background and colour represents the womb and the string shows our physiological make up. The string also works as a symbol showing how one medical problem left untreated can lead to another, thus unravelling the lives of pregnant women. Text reads: 'Don’t let more lives unravel. Support UNICEF and their plight to save women and their babies. Visit unicef.org to find out more.'

My hope for this poster is that it will create a call to action, making the greater community aware of how a mother’s life is precious.
