Outstanding leaders in big data technology are presented with BIG DATA ALL STAR awards, their achievements recognized and published on-line. Craig-Teerlink Design was asked to create a logo representing this competition, for print and web under RUSH conditions.

To better understand the client’s needs, Craig-Teerlink Design researched what distinguishes the BIG DATA ALL STAR award from other such recognitions and learned how the awarding institutions, Datanami and MapR Technologies, envisioned this honor to elevate awareness in the big data community. The awarding institutions intended to ‘shine light’ on outstanding technical achievement in business, bestowing a plaque and publishing the winner’s accomplishments on-line. Craig-Teerlink design concluded that a logotype rather than a symbol would serve them best.

The logotype alludes to a night sky, with overtones of an illuminated computer screen, using easily reproducible lines of color. The hand-rendered letters reference the roman letterforms from ancient star charts and those created for the early digital environment. Thus, illustrating its namesake 'BIG DATA ALL STAR', the logo emblazons plaques and websites and continues to announce winners.
