United Nations Day is observed annually, marked throughout the world by concerts, meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achieve- ments and goals of the United Nations. As indicated by the theme, A Trib- ute to Peacekeeping, the concert celebrates the United Nations Day 2009 by using different art forms to focus on the achievements and importance of United Nations peacekeeping. The poster was designed by the Graphic Design Unit, Outreach Division, DPI, United Nations, New York. The poster design introduces the blue helmet of the Peacekeeping Operations’ soldiers. The blue helmet outlines the sound hole of an acoustic guitar. The color blue is the official color of the United Nations flag. Musical performances by art- ists from a broad array of countries, oral presentations by public figures, and documentary film clips highlighting the faces and stories of the people in the field, will be used to pay homage to the Blue Helmets on the sixty-fourth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. Among the artists who will perform are John McLaughlin (United Kingdom) with the band Remember Shakti (India), Emmanual Jal (Sudan), Sister Fa (Senegal), Sal- man Ahmad (Pakistan), Harry Belafonte (United States), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Lang Lang (China) and Colombian band Aterciopelados. The Mas- ter of Ceremonies will be Isha Sesay of CNN International. The event aims to create greater public awareness of the important mission performed by peacekeeping operations around the globe.
