Being a big fan of Futura, I set out to design a geometric typeface; however, I wanted to differentiate it from the herd by turning it into a geometric slab serif rather than a sans serif. In addition, I like the thick chunkiness of a slab serif. It adds some personality to a sterile geometric sans serif like a pair of work boots on an android.
I studied various similar typefaces, from Rockwell to Rokkitt, as well as other historically successful sans serif geometric typefaces, like Akzidenz-Grotesk. Since this was a personal project, I employed my own touches to ensure that it could be spotted in a sea of similar typefaces. Being a monoline construction, Adobe Illustrator worked well in it's build.
With over 29 thousand downloads on dafont.com alone, Icebreaker has been one of my more popular typefaces! I noticed that other websites have hosted it as well, unbeknownst to me until a recent Google search. It is available free for personal use (EULA available for commercial proposes).
