ZOO Magazine hoped to share with the world the diverse range of fashion coming out of the Netherlands, yet the visual direction was a poor ripoff of other renown magazines, doing nothing to justify that the fashion coming out of the Netherlands truly was one of a kind.
With a goal to show the ecclectic nature of fashion, ZOO needed a design to match variety. In this design project, the masthead becomes simple geometric type with a crossbar striking through it. From issue to issue, the crossbar would change, demonstrating the diversity of fashion ideals. Multiple typefaces come together to create unity in variety, but among all of these eccentric ideas lies a strong grid, zoo cages, that helps contain such a bold vision.
Overall, ZOO has a strong system that helps it be easily identifiable as a fashion magazine but is different enough to stand on its own. With a strong grid to contain the energy of the design, it comes across as clean while it displays the uniqueness and energy of the Netherlands fashion.
