I began by going through the original document to determine what the most important information was. I pulled all the statistical information, as well as a couple pull quotes, and a bulleted list. Once I gathered this, it became clear that the information could be broken down into three main sections. From there I sketched a working layout and loosely determined the arrangement of each piece of information. I knew I wanted the graphics to be representative of everyday scenes a person might encounter in a higher education setting. This led me to developing the first bar graph as if it were displayed on a laptop screen. One of the pull quotes mentioned residence halls, which gave me the opportunity to pull back from the computer screen and show a scene of the student’s workspace. I wanted to continue this theme, and pull back even further to show a college campus. I thought using the buildings as bars in the bar graph would be a great way to do this.
