I was given an class project to design and create a craft beer can design along with other items to create a branding system for the beers. I had creative freedom to design whatever beer I wanted to.
I always start with sketches. Especially for the illustrations I create for my projects. I then build the design around the illustration. The problem with complete creative freedom is coming up with a design to match the expectations of having no limits. We had probably about two and a half weeks to create, design, and mock up everything needed for the project. I was still coming up with ideas on week two.
The typography actually happened by fluke. Last semester, when I created this design I struggled with fonts and type. I struggled with finding fonts not just because I liked them, but that fit the design so I drew the font myself. At this point in my path as a graphic designer, I felt more confident in my artistic illustrative abilities than my design. So I hand-wrote my font.
