Assignment
Design cover/jacket for this recent discovery of previously unknown Walt Whitman material.
“Manly Health and Training”, a thirteen-part series, was published in the New York Atlas in 1858, written by Whitman under the pen name “Mose Velsor.” This nearly 47,000 word journalistic series was lost for more than 150 years, buried in the obscure New York Atlas archives that survived in only a handful of libraries until was it recently uncovered by a graduate student.
Approach
We kept a text-heavy vintage newspaper look true to the original New York Atlas, but took some liberties to liven things up a little and make a truly eye-catching and gift-worthy package. Whitman’s name and a few other elements weren’t carefully designed to fit the lay-out grid, but rather slapped on top—alluding a little to the pen-name aspect and the recent discovery of the true author behind this series. Jacket printed on tactile uncoated newspaper-like stock, and given a slight overall vintage pink tint.
Results
Book was designed and printed in 2016, but is not hitting stores until February 2017, so in time of writing we have no true sales figures, but our accounts have been very excited about the package and think this will do well for father’s day gift etc. It was especially important to stand out among the competition as there are other versions of this material being released about the same time due to the public domain nature of this work.
