Katy Perry was hosting the Video Music Awards and our assignment was to capture images of her to use as the main key art for our VMA advertising campaign.
The Brand Creative team collaborated with well-known photographer David LaChappelle to capture an image so visually impactful it could transcend a single moment. In a nod to big moments in history (MTV’s legacy and the first U.S. moon walk) we placed Katy Perry into the role of the iconic MTV moon man. By creating her as a "moon woman" we reflected our cultural evolution of gender inclusion. Her unique, one-of-a-kind wardrobe, coupled with the photographer’s dynamic, celestial lighting, delivered an arresting image to the viewer. Together these elements created an image that conveyed emotion and felt iconic, groundbreaking, boundless and beyond.
The photograph served as the anchor in our message and was key to the visual storytelling of the full marketing campaign.
