I was commissioned by Purdue Contemporary Dance Company to design a poster advertising for their bi-annual concert. Winter Dance Works is a culmination of hard work and talent that is fostered and developed into a professional dance concert at the end of every semester.
I began by looking through photographs from last semester’s performance. I narrowed down the selection to 30 extremely dynamic and energetic images. The final image I used stood out to me amongst the rest. The dancers come together in a lift to create a unique shape. The title font is Aliens and Cows, which has tall, thin letters, reflecting the overall shape of the dancers, especially highlighting the extended leg flying in the air. The secondary font is Didact Gothic, a rounder, softer, and gentler font to contrast the height of the title. The color of the text is taken directly from the lighting of the image.
The end result is a poster that fosters a sense of depth and space. Both dancers appear to be looking back at the text behind them, forming a relationship between dancers and text. This interaction combined with the top-heavy placement of text creates tension, as if all the elements are balanced atop one another, ready to fall at any moment.
