Tarot Sanguine is a fine-art-themed tarot deck that plays with concepts and metaphors in art, matters of the double-edged human condition. Sanguine means both “optimistic” and “bloodthirsty”—the eye of the artist vs. the eye of the beholder. But which is which?

Approach: Creative Process and Solution:
This deck’s theme is designed to take each card’s complex meanings and correlate them to imagery found in classic paintings, creating associations between humanity and a social context. Each card conveys dual imagery in an upright and transposed display, with light and dark details conveying optimism and pessimism. The card art has more than meets the eye, as seen through a reconstructed narrative revealing new interpretations.

Results – Project Success and Client Reaction:
The final design identity of these cards successfully creates an air of richness and mystery. The cards make the user desire to know more about the reasoning behind the imagery, and ultimately they come together to produce a compelling collector’s deck.
