For this assignment I was asked to make a one page comic about any historical event to be printed on a risograph printer. This means that it needed to be color separated into yellow, florescent pink, medium blue, and black.
I am very interested in types of historical quilts and I had heard about soldier-made quilts before. I had always wanted to do something on the subject so I used the topic for this project. The whole design of the comic is based on a specific pattern from a quilt made by Thomas Walker, the man depicted in the center of the image. The story begins in the top left panel and continues clockwise around the center. However, if read out of order, the facts are still understood. The colors used in the piece are specific to the color palette of the soldier quilts, or convalescent quilts. This palette was based on the colors of the wool uniforms and other garments the soldiers had available.
I received a lot of positive feedback from this piece. Many are excited about the bright colors, the interesting competition, and the intriguing historical facts in the piece.
