Columbia University Medical Center’s Department of Opstetrics & Gynecology wanted to emphasize that they have the extensive resources to care for the health needs of women for their entire lives. The theme of “Continuity of Care” was chosen to convey this concept. They also requested that the book be friendly, upbeat & fresh, avoiding text-heavy pages, and that we feature patient stories in an interesting way. We were also challenged to address all four aspects of their mission: Research, Education, Patient Care & Community.
We establish this “Continuity of Care” theme on the cover with spectromatic line art representing women at various stages of life, which was enhanced with a raised spot-gloss UV coating. The linear illustration continues inside with small images that come in in random places from the edge of the spreads and relate to the content of the section. For the “grateful patient” stories, the patients emerge from full bleed pages with monotone pastel backgrounds, which helps emphasize the person while still giving context to the story. Varied layouts with small chunks of text provide an accessible format, almost “sound bites,” as we detail the department’s impressive list of capabilities and achievements.
The book is being very well received at Columbia. Everyone loves the cover illustration with the raised-gloss UV and the overall friendly yet informative tone of the book. The lively, variable format was also commented on as “inviting & engaging.”
