Create an identity for our first foray in the world of art. Airbnb Art House is a communal project space where 11 artists were invited from around the globe to collaborate together over the theme of Hospitality and Belonging Anywhere. The goal was to have an identity system that would resonate with the demographic of Art Basel HK by creating anticipation and curiosity around the event, and be scalable for any future iterations.
We centered around three design directives that we thought were appropriate for this event. The first being ‘delight’. We wanted to created something aesthetically stimulating through the play of depth, volume and motion. ‘Multiplicity’ was to be conveyed by the layering and repetition of dots. Finally, we wanted to have an element of ‘fantasy’. This space was not to be constrained to the concept of a house, but a free flowing space where we cultivate and celebrate moments of belonging through art. We briefed the artists and closely collaborated with the environmental designer to create a space that would reflect the look of the event, but also his own personal style.
The result was a strong system that scaled seamlessly across all the printed collateral, space design and motion graphics. The abstractness and simplicity of the system allowed for flexibility while remaining visually striking at every touch point. The design of Airbnb Art House allowed for a high level of visual consistency and helped establish an authentic relationship with the art community of Hong Kong and abroad.
