Within my Communication Design program, students are tasked with the challenge of creating a typographical album design. We were asked to design a front cover, back cover, the inside, as well as disc labels for both sides of the vinyl.
Approach
This album was conceptualized as a tribute to the Music For Space Experiment, which was held by the European Space Agency. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of music of an astronaut’s mood while facing the conditions of space. Colorful, painterly digital illustrations of an astronaut slowly getting sucked into space draw in the listener with interest. Hand-drawn, chaotic typography act as the vortex that sucks the astronaut in like a black hole. The inside illustration shows what the astronaut sees on the other side of the vortex. All songs in this album are listed with the purpose of making the listener feel like they are actually getting lost in space.
Results
This project was a personal success where I used my love for trippy and psychedelic illustration as the driving force to complete this mesmerizing addition to my portfolio.
