Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra Annual Festival Concert Poster
The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra commissioned Paone Design Associates to produce its Annual Festival Concert Poster Series. This year, the PYAO repertoire included Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5.” This masterwork, with its veiled meanings and shifting statements of truth, provided inspiration for the artwork. This poster alludes to the Fifth Symphony’s exceedingly complex, layered character by interpreting Shostakovich’s success in satisfying the Soviet regime’s propagandistic demand for monumental triumph and classicism while allowing for personal expression, parody and contradiction. In addition to photography, PDA created the orchestra's proprietary typeface which is utilized as a display font in the posters and program books.
